Victims of Hurricane Matthew in the eastern region of Cuba will be
offered assistance from the World Food Program in coordination with the
Cuban government, the international organization announced Tuesday.

Food delivery will help feed some 180,000 people primarily in Guantánamo
province affected by the wrath of the storm.

“We are working closely with the authorities to support the Cuban
populations affected by this disaster,” said Laura Melo, a WFP
representative in Havana, Prensa Latina reported.

The WFP support is scheduled to last for six months.

For the initial phase, victims in the hardest-hit area — Baracoa, Maisi,
Imias and San Antonio del Sur — will be assisted first with food stocks
WFP already has provided to support the government’s response to the
disaster.

Aid will then be extended to to help the most vulnerable — children
between six months and three years of age, pregnant women and adults
over 65 years — in the municipalities of Caimanera, Manuel Tames and
Yateras in Guantanámo province as well as Moa in Holguin province, WFP said.

The food distribution will include a compound fortified cereal corn and
soybean for pregnant women, and mic-ronutrient powders for children
between 12 and 23 months old to increase the nutritional value of their
daily diet.
